‘Creating Learning Opportunities through Quality Education.’

Welcome to the Goonawarra Primary School's webpage for 2018. I trust that you will find our webpage both informative and a helpful avenue through which to learn about the school.

Goonawarra is nestled on the southern outskirts of Sunbury adjacent to the Rolling Meadows estate. It is a vibrant community which features the school, a neighbourhood house, a very active preschool complex, a community hall, medical centre, pharmacy, dentist and a group of specialty shops, food outlets and sporting facilities.

The school has a current enrolment of 421 students, which is an increase of 43 students since last year. The students are spread across 19 classrooms with an average of 22 per room.

Specialist subjects offered include Physical Education, Visual and Performing Arts and Italian (LOTE).

A full time Reading Intervention position has been established this year to support students, especially in grades 1 – 4.

The school plays a major role within the community as the hub and meeting point for many people within the area.

Facilities include well-resourced classrooms, a large gymnasium, a very attractive and child friendly library and a performing and visual arts venue. All classrooms are installed with split system air conditioning and have their own interactive whiteboards, which are used extensively to enhance educational learning opportunities for students. All students across the school have access to ipads and laptop computers.

The school has a very dedicated and committed staff – both teaching and non-teaching. Their planning for this year includes a wide range of stimulating, challenging and exciting curriculum content which is aimed at guiding and encouraging students to be articulate, numerate and inquisitive learners as well as lifelong seekers of knowledge.

We are fortunate to have a designated Wellbeing Officer and a School Chaplain.  These staff members are a great assist to all members of the school community.

The core values of the school, which are encapsulated in the phrase ‘Goonawarra is G.R.E.A.T!’ include being Generous, Responsible, Enthusiastic, Ambitious and Trustworthy. These values are designed to encourage students to achieve their best in all areas and to be positive, well respected and thoughtful members of our community.

The school is extremely well supported by a vibrant and proactive Parents and Friends group as well as a progressive and committed School Council.

Both Before and After School Care programs are offered on every school day. These are accredited programs and are operated and staffed by Camp Australia, a business which operates many out of school hours programs in the wider community.

Over recent years the school has undertaken a comprehensive review of a wide range of areas associated with life at school using data and survey results from the previous years. A new negotiated, clear and decisive Strategic Plan and an Annual Implementation Plan with goals and improvement targets covering the following years have been the outcome of the review.

The school is very well equipped and resourced to be a leader in developing children, academically, socially, physically and emotionally.

Throughout the last year, the school has benefited from a $350,000 upgrade. Major improvements to the library, basketball courts, toilets and playground areas have greatly enhanced the school facilities.  New classrooms have also been added to accommodate the growing student population.

I encourage you, if you are already associated with the school, to become increasingly involved in the life of the school, or if you are curious about learning more about the school, then phone the office on (03) 9744 7137 or send me an email to arrange a tour.
